J. Donald Dumpson est le chef fondateur du Westminster Choir College Jubilee Singers de Princeton, New Jersey et Minister of Music and Arts au Bright Hope Baptist Church de Philadelphie, Pennsylvania. Il a été invité pour diriger le New Jersey Symphony Orchestra (NJSO) et son chœur et fut salué par la critique. Il a travaillé dans l’équipe de production pour l’émission télévisée “An Evening of Stars” et a contribué à la préparation du chœur pour la production de Porgy and Bess de l’Opéra Company de Philadelphie. J. DONALD DUMPSON, is the founding conductor of the Westminster Choir College Jubilee Singers of Princeton, New Jersey and Minister of Music and Arts at the Bright Hope Baptist Church of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He has guest-conducted the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra (NJSO) and Chorus to critical acclaim. He served on the production team for the syndicated television special, “An Evening of Stars” and assisted with the choral preparation of the Opera Company of Philadelphia’s production of Porgy and Bess. He prepared a special chorus for Christmas performances at Carnegie Hall featuring soprano Barbara Hendricks with conductor Skitch Henderson and the New York Pops Orchestra. He also served as chorus master for the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra’s (NJSO) world-premiere of Hannibal Lokumbe’s, “God, Mississippi, and a Man Called Medgar," featuring the NJSO Community Chorus and Westminster Jubilee Singers. That weekend, he conducted Hannibal’s newest work, “A Shepherd Among Us.” Mr. Dumpson was co-producer for Black Entertainment Television’s First Annual African-American Sacred Music Festival. He also prepared the chorus for the Marian Anderson Award concert with conductor Julius Rudel. He received rave reviews when he prepared a chorus for Porgy and Bess with The Philadelphia Orchestra conducted by Bobby McFerrin. As musical director of the NJSO’s Community Chorus, he made his debut with Zdenek Macal, preparing the chorus for the New Jersey Symphony’s performances of Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 and Holst's "The Planets." This lecture demonstration will explore the wonderful fusion of techniques and historically relevant information that fosters access to the sheer joy of singing African American sacred music. We will engage a variety of sounds and tools to achieve vocally healthy performance practices which foster authentic singing of Black American Gospel Music and African American Spirituals.
