Cécilia Montemayor

 

Cecilia Montemayor est née à Monterrey, N.L. La musique l’entoure depuis l’âge de sept ans quand elle commence des cours de piano. Elle a fait des études de musicologie à l’Université d’Afrique du Sud où elle obtient un certificat en piano. Elle est aussi diplômée pour le chant, de l’Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music in London. Àctuellement, elle suit un Master en pédagogie vocale à la Westminster Choir College de la Rider University.

En tant que soprano, son répertoire inclut des arias d’opéra, des mélodies de divers pays et des oratorios. En tant que soliste, elle a participé à plusieurs concerts au Méxique, aux États-Unis et en Espagne. Elle est chef du Coral Palestrina, chœur féminin qui compte plus de 200 oeuvres à son répertoire, dédié à l’étude, à la recherche et au rayonnement de la musique sacrée.

En tant que musicologue, elle a été chargée de recherches aux Archives Musicales de la Basílica del Roble à Monterrey. Son travail de classification des morceaux et partitions de choeur a abouti à la publication d’ un catalogue. Ce travail lui a été confié par le Département de Musique Sacrée de l’Evêché de Monterrey. À présent, elle travaille sur l’élaboration d’un catalogue des compositeurs mexicains qui ont développé la mélodie mexicaine. Ce travail sera prochainement publié.

Depuis dix ans, Cecilia Montemayor se consacre à l’enseignement musical, notamment en chant et en piano, pour enfants et adultes. Elle est fondatrice et directrice de la Escuela de Piano y Canto de Monterrey, un institut musical fondé en 2002 pour promouvoir les études de chant et de piano de l’enfance à l’âge adulte. Elle est membre de la National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS).

LA MELODIE AU MEXIQUE

En partant de trois périodes du développement de l’histoire de la musique mexicaine, cette conférence-récital offrira un panorama des origines et du développement de la mélodie au Mexique. On prendra en considération les différents éléments culturels, sociaux, politiques, nationaux et internationaux qui ont eu une influence sur son progrès. La conférence traitera des compositeurs clés, des aspects importants de la composition de la mélodie, des poètes préférés, des notions sur l’usage de la langue et des indications sur la diction générale de l’espagnol au Mexique. Le récital comprendra une sélection des mélodies représentatives de chacune de ces périodes et de ces compositeurs.

Cecilia Montemayor was born in Monterrey, N. L. Surrounded by music since early childhood, she started studying the piano at the age of seven. She went on to study musicology at the University of South Africa, and is certified in piano and voice by the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music in London. She is currently studying for a master degree in Vocal Pedagogy at Westminster Choir College at Rider University.

As a soprano her repertoire includes opera arias, art songs from different countries and oratorio. She has given numerous concerts in Mexico, the USA and Spain as a soloist. She is also the conductor of Coral Palestrina, a women’s choir with more than 200 pieces in its repertoire: dedicated to the study, research and performance of sacred music throughout the ages.

As a musicologist she was in charge of all research activities regarding the Music Archives of the Basilica del Roble in Monterrey. Her work sought to classify the archives’ music and choral scores, as well as to organize them into a catalogue. This task was assigned to her by the Sacred Music Department of the Diocese of Monterrey. At present she is finishing her research on Mexican composers and the Mexican art song, which will be the basis of a catalogue for publication in the near future.

For the past ten years, Cecilia Montemayor has been dedicated to the private teaching of music, especially voice and piano, to both children and adults. She is the founder and director of the Escuela de Piano y Canto de Monterrey, a music institute established in 2002 to promote voice and piano studies from early childhood to adulthood. She is a member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS).

THE ART SONG IN MEXICO

With three major periods of development in Mexican musical history as a framework, this conference-recital will give a view of the origins and development of the art song in Mexico. Special attention will be given to the national and international cultural, social and political factors that influenced its progress. The conference will include comments on key composers, important compositional aspects of songs, favored poets, language usage, and general diction guidelines of Spanish in Mexico. The recital will be a selection of songs that best exemplify each period and composer.
